Acer palmatum

Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum), also known as green maple, is originally native to the mountainous regions of Japan, Korea, and China. Unlike evergreen houseplants, it is a seasonal, living plant that transforms the atmosphere of a home with the changing seasons. In interior design, it represents elements of bonsai art and Eastern naturalism.
Appearance:
It has delicately cut, palmate leaves that are light green in spring and summer, turning into vibrant shades of orange and red in autumn. Its branching structure is very fine and visually striking.
Light:
It requires bright, filtered light. Indoors, it should be placed near well-lit windows. Strong direct midday sunlight can burn its delicate leaf edges.
Watering:
It needs consistent moisture. The soil should not dry out completely (this causes rapid leaf drop), but overwatering can suffocate the roots. Water regularly using chlorine-free water, as chlorine can burn the leaf tips.
Humidity:
This plant is highly humidity-loving. In dry indoor air, its leaves quickly turn brown and dry out. Using a humidifier near the plant is essential for maintaining its health.
Soil:
It prefers acidic, light, and rich soil (a mix of leaf mold, peat moss, and perlite) with excellent drainage.
Temperature:
It thrives in cooler conditions, ideally between 15–22°C.
Critical note: For long-term survival, it requires a winter dormancy period (low temperatures, but not extreme freezing). Keeping it constantly in warm indoor environments weakens the plant.
Toxicity:
This plant is non-toxic and safe for pets.
Golden tip:
The Japanese maple is not a forgiving plant. The main reason for failure in keeping it indoors is dry air and lack of humidity. If you want to grow it in an apartment, use a pebble tray with water under the pot and move it to a balcony or a well-ventilated area during summer.
