Anthurium

Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum) is one of those plants that looks luxurious, sculptural, and slightly dramatic at the same time. It is native to the rainforests of Central and South America, where it often grows as a semi-epiphyte—meaning its roots prefer a light, airy, and moist environment, not dense, suffocating soil.

Appearance:
It has broad, leathery, glossy leaves, but its main attraction is the heart-shaped spathes in red, pink, white, or even green. Its look is neat, formal, and very eye-catching—perfect for minimalist or luxury interiors.

Light:
It needs bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light encourages better flowering. Strong direct sunlight can burn the leaves and spathes, while low light usually leads to reduced flowering and slower growth.

Watering:
Anthurium does not like constantly wet soil. Water it when the top layer of the soil has slightly dried out. Overwatering quickly leads to yellowing leaves, root rot, and loss of flower vitality. Excess water must always drain out of the pot.

Humidity:
It loves high humidity. In dry air, leaf tips may turn brown and the plant loses its visual quality. Ideal humidity is around 50–70%. Using a humidifier or placing it near other plants helps.

Soil:
It requires a light, well-draining, and airy mix—a combination of peat moss, perlite, coco peat, and a bit of pine bark or wood chips works well. Heavy, compact soil is its enemy.

Temperature:
A range of 18–28°C is ideal. It is sensitive to cold and should not be exposed to cold drafts, air conditioners, or sudden temperature fluctuations.

Toxicity:
This plant is toxic. Like many aroids, it contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause mouth irritation, throat discomfort, and digestive issues if chewed.

Golden tip:
For a healthy appearance and better flowering, Anthurium needs environmental stability. Frequent relocation, sudden light changes, and irregular watering quickly affect it. If the leaves become dull, gently wipe them with a soft, damp cloth to restore their shine and improve photosynthesis.
