Euphorbia milii, popular for its ease of care and continuous flowering, is another member of the euphorbia family. This is a wonderful “flowering succulent” that produces small, colorful flowers (usually red, pink, white, or yellow) most of the year.
Appearance: It has woody, rough stems covered with long, sharp spines. The leaves are green and oval. What we see as flowers are actually “bracts” (modified leaves) and the main flower is very small and located in the center.
Light: It needs a lot of direct light to bloom. It needs at least 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight (behind a south-facing window). If it doesn’t get enough light, it will grow herbaceous and stop blooming.
Watering: It stores water due to the fleshy texture of the stems. Let the soil dry completely between waterings. In winter, when the plant is dormant, watering should be very limited (only to prevent the stems from shriveling).
Humidity: It needs very low ambient humidity. It is perfectly adapted to the dry air of the apartment and does not like spraying at all (too much moisture on the leaves causes fungus).
Soil: Light soil with very strong drainage (mixture of cactus soil, sand and a little peat moss).
Temperature: It likes warm temperatures (20 to 30 degrees). It is sensitive to cold and temperatures below 10 degrees can cause its leaves to fall.
Toxicity: Very toxic. Like all members of the Euphorbia family, the white sap inside the stem contains irritants and toxins that cause irritation and inflammation if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes and is dangerous if swallowed. Always wear gloves when pruning or working with the pot.
Golden tip: “Prune for flowering”. Coral needs to be topped and pruned in the spring to stay bushy and produce more flowers. Don’t worry about the blades, use sharp scissors and thick gloves to trim long, non-flowering branches so that the plant’s energy is spent on new lateral branches.
