Croton (Codiaeum variegatum):
Croton is famous for its striking colors such as yellow, orange, red, and green. It’s like a living piece of art in your home. However, it is considered a fussy plant because it is very sensitive to environmental conditions. If something is not right, it quickly reacts by dropping its leaves.
Appearance:
It has thick, leathery leaves with a wide variety of shapes and colors. The more light it receives, the brighter and more vibrant its colors become.
Light:
It needs very bright, indirect light. A spot near a south-facing window is ideal. In low light, its colors fade and turn dark green.
Watering:
Water regularly. When the top layer of soil becomes slightly dry, water it again. The soil should always remain consistently moist, not too wet and not completely dry.
Humidity:
This plant loves humidity. Dry indoor air can cause leaf drop. Daily misting, using a humidifier, or a humidity tray is recommended.
Soil:
Use rich soil with good drainage, such as a mix of peat moss, perlite, and leaf compost.
Temperature:
The ideal temperature is between 20 and 28°C. Croton hates the cold. Temperatures below 15°C are harmful. It also reacts negatively to temperature changes and drafts like air conditioners.
Toxicity:
Highly toxic. Its milky sap can cause skin irritation and can be poisonous if ingested by children or pets.
Tip:
If leaves start dropping from the bottom, it is most likely due to low humidity or low temperature. Also, avoid moving the plant frequently.
