Ficus altissima

Ficus altissima, also known as the “Golden Ficus,” belongs to the large ficus family and is considered one of the most luxurious and unique indoor ficus plants due to its distinctive leaf patterns.

Appearance:
The leaves are oval-shaped, broad, and leathery. Its main appeal lies in its variegation—the leaves have a dark green base covered with irregular patches of bright yellow, lime, or cream, as if they were hand-painted.

Light:
To maintain the vibrant variegated colors, it needs very bright but indirect light. Strong direct sunlight (especially through glass in summer) can burn the yellow areas, while low light causes the leaves to turn uniformly green and lose their unique beauty. East- or west-facing windows with filtered light are ideal.

Watering:
It needs regular watering but is very sensitive to waterlogging. The best time to water is when about 5–7 cm of the top soil has dried out. Overwatering can lead to leaf drop and sudden yellowing.

Humidity:
Like most ficus plants, it prefers tropical humidity. Although it adapts to normal indoor conditions, it performs best at 40–60% humidity. During winter, when heating systems are on, using a humidifier or misting helps keep the leaves fresh.

Soil:
It requires rich, light soil with excellent drainage. A mix of peat moss, coco peat, perlite, and a bit of vermicompost is ideal for both nutrition and quick drainage of excess water.

Temperature:
The ideal temperature is 18–27°C. Ficus altissima is very sensitive to sudden temperature changes, direct drafts from air conditioners, or heat from heaters, and may drop its leaves if exposed to temperature shock.

Toxicity:
This plant contains a milky sap (latex) and is toxic to cats, dogs, and children. If ingested, it can irritate the mouth, stomach, and digestive system, so it should be kept out of reach of pets.

Pro tip:
The broad leaves collect a lot of dust, which can block photosynthesis. At least once a month, gently clean both sides of the leaves with a soft, damp cloth. This not only keeps the plant healthy and vibrant but also helps prevent pests like spider mites.
