Fittonia

Fittonia (Fittonia / Nerve Plant), with its velvety leaves and striking white, pink, or red veins that spread across the foliage, is one of the most beautiful miniature plants for terrariums or as an accent around larger potted plants. It is an excellent choice for people who appreciate delicate details and are willing to monitor the plant’s moisture levels regularly.

– Appearance: A low-growing, spreading plant with small leaves featuring highly pronounced, colorful veins that resemble a network of nerves or an intricate map.
– Light: Prefers moderate, bright indirect light. Direct sunlight can quickly scorch its delicate leaves, while insufficient light causes the vibrant vein colors to fade and encourages weak, leggy growth.
– Watering: Extremely important! Fittonia loves moisture. Its soil should remain consistently moist but never waterlogged. If the soil dries out, the plant will dramatically wilt almost immediately. Fortunately, timely watering usually revives it within a short period.
– Humidity: This plant thrives in high humidity. If you live in a dry environment, use a pebble tray, a cool-mist humidifier, or mist the plant regularly. Its love of humidity makes it one of the best choices for terrariums.
– Soil: A light, nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive potting mix is ideal. A blend of peat moss, coco coir, and a small amount of perlite works particularly well.
– Temperature: The ideal temperature range is 18–26°C (64–79°F). Keep it away from heaters, radiators, and direct drafts from air conditioners or fans.
– Golden Tip: Fittonia is often called the “fainting plant” because it dramatically collapses when it becomes too dry. If you notice the leaves drooping, don’t assume the plant is dead—give it water, and in many cases it will perk back up within a few hours. It is also considered non-toxic and is generally safe to keep around pets.
