Pilea peperomioides

Pitaya (Pilea peperomioides) is named for the round, spoon-shaped leaves. Pitaya, or spoon plant, is a very beautiful and popular houseplant that is relatively easy to maintain. The unique shape of its leaves, which resemble coins or spoons, distinguishes it from other plants. By producing lateral stems (side shoots), this plant quickly becomes dense and adds a special beauty to the environment.

Appearance: It has thin, long stems with round, shiny, green leaves emerging from the ends of the stems. The leaves are usually attached to the stem in the center and have an umbrella-like appearance. If conditions are favorable, it also produces small, white flowers.

Light: It needs bright but indirect light. Direct sunlight, especially strong afternoon light, can cause burns and damage to the leaves. The best place for this plant is by a window that receives plenty of light but not direct sunlight (such as a north or east-facing window, or slightly further away from a west or south-facing window). Lack of light will cause the stems to grow long and weak and the leaves to shrink.
Watering: Allow the top 2 to 3 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Then water the plant thoroughly to drain excess water from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. The plant’s water needs will decrease in the winter.
Humidity: This plant likes medium to high humidity. Dry apartment air, especially in the winter, can cause the tips of the leaves to brown. To provide humidity, you can mist the leaves lightly (especially in the morning), place the pot on a tray of pebbles and water (so that the bottom of the pot does not touch the water), or use a cool mist humidifier near the plant.
Soil: Requires light, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A mixture of potting soil, peat moss, perlite, and a little cocopeat is suitable for this plant.
Temperature: Prefers average room temperature (around 18 to 24 degrees Celsius). Avoid exposing it to extreme temperature fluctuations, such as near heating or cooling sources.
Toxicity: Pitaya is not toxic to humans or pets, and there is no need to worry about this.

Golden tip: Pitaya naturally produces a lot of suckers. You can separate these suckers and plant them in separate pots to have new plants. Also, to maintain the symmetrical appearance of the plant, rotate the pot every so often so that the light reaches all parts evenly.
