Portulacaria afra

The Portulacaria afra plant, also known as the “jade shrub” (often confused with Crassula), is one of the most popular plants among bonsai enthusiasts and succulent lovers. Native to South Africa, it is known for its high resilience and miniature appearance, and is considered a symbol of stability and wealth in various cultures.
Appearance:
A plant with thick, brown stems and small, round, fleshy leaves in a bright green color. Under suitable conditions, it grows at a good rate. Due to its high tolerance for pruning, it can easily be shaped into a tree-like form.
Light:
This plant loves light. For ideal, compact growth, it requires direct sunlight or very bright filtered light. If it does not receive enough light, the stems become weak and leggy, and the spacing between leaves increases. South-facing windows are the best location.
Watering:
Portulacaria is a succulent and is very sensitive to overwatering. You should allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, when the plant is dormant, watering should be reduced to a minimum.
Humidity:
Unlike many houseplants, it is adapted to dry air and does not require artificial humidity (such as misting). Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal diseases.
Soil:
It needs soil with excellent drainage. A mix designed for cacti and succulents (including sand, peat moss, and some charcoal for disinfection) works very well.
Temperature:
It prefers moderate to warm temperatures (18–28°C). It is very sensitive to cold, and if the temperature drops below 10°C, it should be moved to a warmer environment.
Toxicity:
This plant is non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a very safe choice for indoor environments.
Golden Tip:
Portulacaria is one of the best plants for practicing bonsai. If you want a dense, tree-like plant, don’t hesitate to prune the tips during the growing season; this encourages the plant to produce more side branches and become fuller.
