Red Euphorbia (Euphorbia lactea ‘Cristata’ or ‘Rubra’) is a rare and visually striking succulent often sold as a grafted plant. Although commonly referred to as a cactus, it actually belongs to the Euphorbia genus. The colorful red or purple crest contains little chlorophyll and depends on the green rootstock beneath it for photosynthesis and survival. Its sculptural form and vivid color make it a standout choice for contemporary and minimalist interiors.
Appearance
The upper portion of the plant forms a unique fan-shaped or crested structure with wavy, fleshy ridges in shades of red, deep pink, or purple. This ornamental crest is grafted onto a sturdy green stem, creating a dramatic architectural look unlike most other houseplants.
Light Requirements
Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the plant’s vibrant coloration. Adequate light helps preserve the rich red tones, while insufficient light may cause the crest to lose intensity and become greener or weaker. Intense midday summer sun can scorch the delicate upper portion, so some protection during the hottest hours is beneficial.
Watering
Water only when the growing medium has dried out completely. During winter dormancy, reduce watering significantly. Avoid allowing water to collect around the graft union or within the folds of the crested top, as trapped moisture can quickly lead to rot.
Humidity
This plant prefers dry conditions and does not require additional humidity. High moisture levels or frequent misting may encourage fungal diseases and should be avoided.
Soil
A fast-draining cactus or succulent mix is essential. A blend containing coarse sand, fine gravel, and a small amount of peat moss provides excellent drainage and helps keep the roots healthy.
Temperature
Warm temperatures between 20°C and 30°C (68°F–86°F) are ideal. Protect the plant from cold conditions, as exposure to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) can seriously damage both the graft and the rootstock.
Toxicity
Like other members of the Euphorbia family, this plant produces a milky white latex sap that is highly irritating and toxic. The sap can cause severe skin and eye irritation and is dangerous if ingested by pets or humans. Always wear protective gloves when handling, pruning, or repotting the plant.
Care Tip
The graft union is the most vulnerable part of the plant and should always be kept dry. Never spray water directly onto the crest, and water only at the base of the pot. If the red crest begins to turn brown, dull, or unhealthy-looking, it may indicate insufficient light or root rot caused by excess moisture.
