Ruby Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica ‘Ruby’) Due to its glossy leaves with a mix of green, cream, and ruby-pink colors, it is one of the most striking ornamental ficus plants. It is best suited for spaces that have good light and where the plant is intended to play a strong decorative role.
• Appearance: Broad, leathery, and glossy leaves with variegated green and cream patterns. On new growth, a pink or ruby tint can be seen. The better the light conditions, the more vivid and beautiful these colors remain.
• Light: Bright, indirect light. Low light causes fading of variegation and slower growth. Strong direct sunlight, especially through hot glass, can scorch the leaves.
• Watering: Water when about 3–5 cm of the topsoil feels dry. Usually once a week during the growing season and less in winter. The soil should not remain constantly wet.
• Humidity: It tolerates average household humidity, but in moderate to high humidity, the leaves stay fresher and healthier.
• Soil: Light, nutrient-rich soil with good drainage; a mix of potting soil + perlite + a little peat moss or coco peat is ideal.
• Temperature: The ideal range is 18–28°C. It is sensitive to cold, air conditioning drafts, and sudden temperature changes.
• Fertilizing: During spring and summer, feed every 3–4 weeks with a diluted complete fertilizer. Over-fertilizing can damage the roots.
• Toxicity: The white sap may cause skin irritation and is toxic to pets.
Golden tip: This plant does not like being moved or experiencing sudden environmental changes. If it suddenly drops leaves, it is usually due to environmental shock, improper lighting, or irregular watering.
