The Ruby Ficus (Ficus elastica Ruby) is one of the most striking ornamental ficuses due to its glossy leaves with a combination of green, cream, and pink-ruby colors, and is best suited to spaces that have both good light and are intended to have a bold decorative role.
• Appearance: Broad, leathery, glossy leaves with green and cream veins that appear on new growth with a pink or ruby tint. The more suitable the light, the clearer and more beautiful these colors will remain.
• Light: High and indirect. Low light will cause the veins to fade and growth to slow down. Strong direct sunlight, especially behind hot glass, can burn the leaves.
• Watering: Water when the top 3 to 5 cm of soil is dry. Usually once a week during the growing season and less often in the cold season. The soil should not be constantly wet.
• Humidity: It tolerates normal house humidity, but the leaves stay fresher in moderate to high humidity.
• Soil: Light, rich soil with good drainage; a mixture of potting soil + perlite + a little peat moss or coco peat is suitable.
• Temperature: The best temperature range is 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. It is sensitive to cold, drafts, and sudden changes in temperature.
• Fertilization: In spring and summer, fertilize every 3 to 4 weeks with a diluted complete fertilizer. Overfertilizing can damage the roots.
• Toxicity: Its white sap can also be a skin irritant and is toxic to pets.
Golden tip: This plant does not like moving or drastic changes in conditions; if it suddenly drops leaves, it is usually due to environmental shock, inadequate light, or irregular watering.
