Dieffenbachia: Dieffenbachia, also known as Dumb Cane, is very popular because of its large leaves with cream, yellow, or white patterns and its fast growth. It is considered a decorative and eye-catching houseplant.
Appearance: It has thick, fleshy stems and large, broad leaves with beautiful, irregular patterns.
Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light. In low light, the leaf patterns fade and the plant turns solid green. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves and cause brown spots.
Watering: Water when the top 3 to 5 cm of soil has dried out. Avoid overwatering, as its fleshy roots are prone to rot.
Humidity: This plant loves humidity. Dry air can cause the leaf tips to turn brown. Misting or using a humidity tray is very helpful.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18 and 26 degrees Celsius. It is very sensitive to temperature changes and cold drafts such as air conditioning.
Toxicity: Highly toxic. Its sap contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause severe swelling, burning, and difficulty speaking if ingested or if it comes into contact with the mouth or eyes. Keep away from children and pets.
Tip: When cleaning or pruning, wear gloves to avoid contact with the sap. If the plant becomes too tall, you can cut it back to encourage new growth.
