Schefflera arboricola ‘Amit’ is a compact, dwarf cultivar of the popular dwarf umbrella tree, prized for its dense growth habit and beautifully variegated foliage. Compared to standard Schefflera varieties, ‘Amit’ features smaller, fuller leaves and a more refined appearance, making it an excellent choice for modern homes and office spaces. In addition to its ornamental appeal, it is also appreciated for its air-purifying qualities and easy-care nature.

Appearance

This variety produces clusters of palm-shaped leaves with multiple small leaflets arranged like the spokes of an umbrella. The foliage displays an attractive mix of deep green accented with creamy white or golden-yellow variegation. Its naturally bushy growth creates a lush, compact form, while mature stems gradually become woody and sturdy over time.

Light Requirements

Bright, indirect light is ideal for maintaining healthy growth and vibrant variegation. Adequate lighting helps preserve the yellow and cream patterns on the leaves, whereas insufficient light may cause the foliage to become uniformly green and the plant to develop stretched, leggy growth. Protect it from harsh direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) of soil feels dry. During the active growing season in spring and summer, the plant typically requires more frequent watering, while irrigation should be reduced during winter. Excellent drainage is essential, as consistently wet soil can lead to yellowing leaves, leaf drop, and root problems.

Humidity

Schefflera ‘Amit’ prefers moderate to relatively high humidity but adapts well to typical indoor conditions. Humidity levels around 40–50% encourage optimal growth, and occasional misting or the use of a pebble tray during hot weather can help keep the foliage healthy and vibrant.

Soil

A light, well-draining potting mix is recommended. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and organic matter such as leaf compost provides the aeration and drainage needed for strong root development.

Temperature

The ideal temperature range is between 18°C and 27°C (64°F–81°F). The plant is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and should be kept away from direct drafts, air-conditioning vents, and heating sources that may trigger leaf drop.

Toxicity

Like other Schefflera varieties, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and is considered toxic if ingested. Consumption may cause irritation of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract in both humans and pets.

Care Tip

To encourage a fuller, bushier shape, prune or pinch back the stem tips during spring. This stimulates branching and promotes dense lateral growth instead of excessive height. Wiping the leaves with a damp cloth once a month also helps remove dust, supports healthy respiration, and discourages common household pests.
