Yucca elephantipes:
This plant originates from desert and semi-arid regions of Central America. In interior design, yucca is seen as a symbol of strength and structure because of its thick, woody stems that give it a tree-like appearance.
Appearance:
It has thick, woody stems that end in clusters of long, sword-shaped, pointed green leaves. Its overall look is bold yet modern.
Light:
Yucca loves bright, direct light. Unlike many houseplants, it can tolerate direct sunlight very well, especially near south-facing windows. In low light, the leaves become weak, thin, and droopy, and the plant loses its structure.
Watering:
The general rule is “less water is better than too much.” Let the soil dry out to about 5 cm deep during the growing season and almost completely in winter. Overwatering is the biggest problem and can cause root and stem rot.
Humidity:
It prefers low humidity and adapts well to dry indoor air. It does not need misting, and too much humidity can even cause fungal problems.
Soil:
Needs very light soil with excellent drainage. A cactus mix or regular potting soil combined with a large amount of sand and perlite is ideal so water drains quickly.
Temperature:
Temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius are ideal. It can tolerate a wider range, but it is sensitive to extreme cold and frost.
Toxicity:
Toxic to pets and children. If ingested, it may cause digestive issues. The sharp leaf tips can also cause minor injuries, so keep it in a safe place.
Tip:
If your yucca grows too tall, you can easily cut the stem to control its height. This will also encourage the plant to produce 2 or 3 new shoots, making it fuller. The cut stem can also be rooted in soil or water to grow a new plant.
