Ficus elastica Burgundy (Ficus Black): This plant, also known as Burgundy Rubber Plant, is one of the most popular decorative plants in modern and minimalist styles. It originates from tropical regions of South Asia.
Appearance: It has wide, oval, leathery, and very glossy leaves. Young leaves are dark reddish, and as they mature, they turn very dark green, almost black.
Light: Needs bright, indirect light. Good light helps maintain the dark color of the leaves. In low light, the plant becomes leggy and may lose leaves. Direct sunlight, especially at midday, can cause burn spots on the leaves.
Watering: Let 50 to 75 percent of the soil dry out before watering thoroughly. It is very sensitive to overwatering and quickly reacts with yellowing and leaf drop.
Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is suitable. In very dry conditions, occasional misting or wiping the leaves with a damp cloth helps keep the plant healthy and clean.
Soil: Needs rich soil with excellent drainage. A mix of leaf compost, peat moss, and perlite is ideal to prevent water buildup around the roots.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18 and 26 degrees Celsius. Keep it away from direct air from air conditioners, heaters, or cold drafts, as this can cause sudden leaf drop.
Toxicity: Toxic to pets and children. The white sap contains latex, which can cause irritation or poisoning if touched or ingested.
Tip: This plant loves to stay clean. Wipe the leaves every couple of weeks with a damp sponge to keep them dust-free and help photosynthesis. If it becomes tall and thin, pruning the top will encourage fuller growth.
