Ficus lyrata (Fiddle Leaf Fig), often referred to as the “celebrity of the plant world,” is a staple of magazine-style interior design thanks to its sculptural appearance and large, striking leaves. This plant is native to the rainforests of West Africa. Unlike plants such as horsetail palm or yucca, the fiddle leaf fig is considered “temperamental,” meaning it is highly sensitive to environmental changes. If its lighting or temperature conditions shift, it will protest by dropping its leaves. Caring for a fiddle leaf fig requires patience and consistent attention to its routine.
Appearance:
It features very large, leathery, broad leaves shaped like a violin (lyre). These leaves, with their prominent veins, give the plant a very luxurious look.
Light:
It needs plenty of bright, indirect light. The best spot is near south- or east-facing windows. It enjoys gentle morning sunlight, but harsh midday sun can burn its broad leaves. Low light causes the spaces between leaves to increase, giving the plant a sparse and leggy appearance.
Watering:
It is sensitive to watering. Let the soil dry out to about halfway down the pot (or roughly to the first knuckle of your finger) before watering again. It dislikes sitting in water—this quickly leads to brown spots on the leaves and root rot.
Humidity:
Unlike yucca, it loves humidity. An ambient humidity of 40–60% is ideal. In dry indoor air, misting or using a humidifier is necessary to prevent the leaf edges from drying out.
Soil:
A light, well-draining soil mix that doesn’t retain excess water (a combination of peat moss, perlite, cocopeat, and a bit of charcoal powder).
Temperature:
A range of 18–28°C (64–82°F) is ideal. It is very sensitive to direct drafts (from air conditioners or window gaps). If placed in a drafty spot, expect leaf drop.
Toxicity:
Toxic to pets and children. The plant’s sap contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause severe skin irritation and digestive issues if ingested.
Golden Tip:
Fiddle leaf figs crave stability. Once you find a suitable spot (with adequate light and no drafts), avoid moving it. To prevent the plant from leaning toward the light, rotate the pot slightly every two weeks so all sides receive light. Cleaning the leaves with a damp cloth is essential for proper photosynthesis in these large leaves.
