Light: This plant loves full, direct sunlight. If you keep it indoors, be sure to place it behind a sunny window (preferably south-facing). Lack of light will cause the stem to become thin and weak and the plant to bend towards the light.
Watering: The Madagascar palm stores water in its stem, so it is sensitive to excessive watering. During the growing season (spring and summer): Water when the soil surface is completely dry to a depth of a few centimeters. During the dormant season (autumn and winter): Reduce watering greatly (only to the extent that the stem does not shrivel). Excessive watering in winter causes root rot.
Temperature and humidity: It likes warm weather and does not tolerate extreme cold. During the resting season (winter), cool temperatures (around 15 degrees) are suitable for it.
Soil and drainage: The best soil for this plant is cactus and succulent soil that has very high drainage. The pot must have proper ventilation holes so that excess water can easily drain.
Toxicity: This plant is poisonous. The white sap inside can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes, and it is dangerous for humans and pets if swallowed.
Golden tip: The Madagascar palm naturally loses its leaves in the fall and winter (dormant period), leaving the stem bare. Don’t worry; with the onset of spring and increased light, new leaves will grow from the tip of the stem.
