Nicolai Palm (Nicolai Palm / Rhapis nicolai) is a resilient and well-shaped indoor palm with slow growth, making it a popular choice for home environments. It gives a neat and luxurious look to a space and is generally more adaptable to typical indoor conditions.
• Appearance: It has fan-shaped, finely divided leaves that emerge like small fans from the stems. In ideal conditions, it grows bushy and dense, resembling a Lady Palm, though its leaves are usually slightly larger and fuller.
• Light: Medium to bright indirect light. It can tolerate low light, but growth will slow down in such conditions.
• Watering: Water after the top 2–4 cm of soil has dried out. It is sensitive to overwatering and standing water in the saucer.
• Humidity: humidity is suitable; in dry air, occasional light misting is recommended (especially when the air becomes very dry).
• Soil: Light, well-draining soil (a mix of peat moss or coco peat + perlite) is ideal to prevent roots from sitting in water.
• Temperature: 18–28°C; avoid cold, direct drafts from air conditioners, and sudden temperature changes.
• Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic for pets and children (though it’s still best to prevent chewing on the leaves).
Golden tip: If the leaf tips turn brown, it is usually due to dry air, underwatering, or mineral buildup in the water.
